It is important to be understood. It is healing for the mind and spirit. Through my artwork, my goal is to be a voice for the unheard and unseen. Empathy drives every brushstroke and narrative. Whether it be grief, despair, invisibility, or healing and growth. My artwork is meant to be uncomfortable. it is meant to invoke emotions that are being portrayed in the pieces or a moment in time through the lens of something in a more spiritual, surreal, and imaginative style. ‘My Art Heals’ is a senior thesis series of paintings that touches on grief, social justice milestones, and moments of self-discovery. Art has been a form of personal expression for me since childhood. My art focuses on the surreal outlook of life that is formed by inspiration and everyday accomplishments that we experience as human beings in the Black and LGTBQ communities. Through my recent pieces like Masquerade, and The Premature Epitaph of Kaya, or The Straw That Broke the Camel’s Back, I look into moments of my life, or the lives of my loved ones and people who are like me, and create a visual representation for them in a way that I perceive theyre spirits and their impact on my personal life. I recreate moments that a lot of people may not understand. Not everyone understands how to express grief or how grief is handled by different types of people. Not everyone understands that moment of discrimination. In this series, my journey is reflected in change, growth, and healing. As a member of the LGBTQ community, the Black community, and also as a woman, I have witnessed and experienced forms of discrimination, passive aggression, and common displays of discomfort. I once was hurt by this, but as time went on I visualized these emotions and figured out a way to visualize a solution, the hidden struggles, and revelations that come with it. The overall goal of my work is to share the pilgrimage of life and share the search of self discovery I go through every day. My future accomplishments may be unknown, but with my work I hope to discover myself, and inspire others to do the same. |
